Sims who run around in a bikini during snow storms risk freezing to death, and Sims who stay out in the heat too long can suffer sunburns or even spontaneously combust. Changing the seasons’ lengths can present their own set of challenges, as weather and temperature are now fully simulated as well. I appreciate the freedom to customize my experience per neighborhood out of the box without relying on in-game items or rewards that I would have to earn to change the seasons as I wish. If you’re role-playing a neighborhood in the south, you can shorten winter to only a few days or even cut it out entirely, as well as ban certain specific types of weather from appearing. Each save file can also have its specific seasons customized at any time. Unlike some of the other expansion packs, Seasons dovetails nicely into established neighborhoods, requiring only one new lot placed before easing you into the new features. In fact, the impact of the ease of maintaining relationships will be felt immediately, even if you’ve been playing for generations. Relationships have always been tricky to manage given how much your Sims need to work to succeed, and all these added activities make creating and maintaining relationships much easier. The whole household can head to the park during seasonal festivals to win prize tickets and bond with each other or new friends over carnival-like events, and seasonal “Leisure Days” give everyone a chance to stay home from work or school. Kids can help their parents build snowmen during winter, for example, especially if school is called off for a snow day. Nearly every added event enhances your Sims’ relationships in some way, and it sells the concept of watching over a true family. Given that one of the draws of the Sims franchise has been your avatars’ socialization, Seasons succeeds by using that as a central focus. Each season brings small effects to enhance all your Sims’ lives, adding to the unwritten narrative for each day that passes. Sim kids will trick-or-treat in fall, and your bachelors and bachelorettes will find it easier to fall in love in the spring. You’ll see summer storms that leave puddles behind to splash in, or winter blizzards that are perfect for making snow angels. Similar to the identically named expansion for The Sims 2, Seasons adds weather and activities specific to your seasons. Regardless of any expansions you may already own, Seasons will significantly alter your Sims experience in positive ways.
